Samuel Barnes is an up-and-coming, Melbourne-based director and writer. He is a Media Arts & Production graduate from the University of Technology, Sydney, in 2013 studied documentary and 16mm filmmaking at the prestigious University of Texas at Austin and is currently studying a Masters of Narrative Film and Television at the prestigious Victorian College of Arts.
His award-winning short films Dream Reel (2015) and Kent Stay in the Woods (2017) have been successful in international markets, having screened in various global film festivals. In his first semester at the VCA, Samuel directed the short film The Big Forget (2019) and is currently producing the short film Mira (2019).
Samuel’s longing to explore his identity and connection with nature inspires his filmmaking practice. He is intrigued by narratives that give insight into the worlds of characters we don’t typically see or hear. Samuel’s mission is to use his filmmaking privilege to speak up for the voiceless and inspire his audiences to search for unity within themselves.
